Main Verbs الأفعال الرئيسية

Main verbs are also called "lexical verbs".

الأفعال الرئيسية تدعى "lexical verbs" أيضا.

Main verbs have meaning on their own (unlike helping verbs). There are thousands of main verbs, and we can classify them in several ways:

الأفعال الرئيسية لها معنى لوحدها (على خلاف الأفعال المساعدة). يوجد الآف من الأفعال الرئيسية، و نستطيع تصنيفها بعدة طرق:

Transitive and intransitive verbs
الأفعال المتعدية واللازمة

A transitive verb takes a direct object: Somebody killed the President. An intransitive verb does not have a direct object: He died. Many verbs, like speak, can be transitive or intransitive. Look at these examples:

الفعل المتعدي يقبل المفعول به المباشر: شخص ما قتل الرئيس. الفعل اللازم ليس له مفعول به مباشر: توفى. الكثير من الأفعال، مثل يتكلم، يمكن أن تكون متعدية أو لازمة. إنظر إلى هذه الأمثلة:

transitive:

• I 'saw' an elephant.
• We are 'watching' TV.
• He 'speaks' English.

متعدي:

• رأيت فيلا.
• نشاهد التلفاز.
• يتكلم الإنجليزية.

intransitive:

• He has 'arrived'.
• John 'goes' to school.
• She 'speaks' fast.

لازم:

• وصل.
• جون يذهب إلى المدرسة.
• تتكلم بسرعة.

Linking verbs
الأفعال الارتباطية

A linking verb does not have much meaning in itself. It "links" the subject to what is said about the subject. Usually, a linking verb shows equality (=) or a change to a different state or place (>). Linking verbs are always intransitive (but not all intransitive verbs are linking verbs).

الفعل الارتباطي ليس له معنى ذو قيمة لوحده. يصل الفاعل مع ما قيل عنه (الفاعل). عادتا، الفعل الارتباطي يعبر عن مساواة (=) أو تغير في حالة مختلفة أو مكان مختلف (<). الفعل الارتباطي دائما لازم (لكن ليس كل الأفعال اللازمة أفعال أرتباطية).

• Mary 'is' a teacher. (Mary = teacher)
• Tara 'is' beautiful. (Tara = beautiful)
• That 'sounds' interesting. (that = interesting)
• The sky 'became' dark. (the sky > dark)
• The bread 'has gone' bad. (bread > bad)

• ماري معلمة. (ماري = معلمة)
• تارا جميلة. (تارا = جميلة)
• ذلك يبدو ممتعا (ذلك = ممتع)
• السماء أصبحت مظلمة. (السماء < مظلمة)
• الخبز فسد. (خبز < فسد)

Dynamic and stative verbs
الأفعال الدينامكية (الحركية) و الحالة

Some verbs describe action. They are called "dynamic", and can be used with continuous tenses. Other verbs describe state (non-action, a situation). They are called "stative", and cannot normally be used with continuous tenses (though some of them can be used with continuous tenses with a change in meaning).

بعض الأفعال تصف الحركة. يدعون "(أفعال) حركية"، و يستعملون مع صيغ الأفعال المستمرة. أفعال أخرى تصف الحالة (لاحركة، حالة). يدعون "(أفعال)الحالة"، و عادتا لا يستعملون مع صيغ الأفعال المستمرة (بالرغم من ذالك البعض منهم يمكن استعماله مع صيغ الأفعال المستمرة مع تغيير في المعنى).

dynamic verbs (examples):

الأفعال الحركية (أمثلة)

• hit, explode, fight, run, go

• يضرب، ينفجر، يعارك، يجري، يذهب

stative verbs (examples):

أفعال الحالة (أمثلة)

• be
• like, love, prefer, wish
• impress, please, surprise
• hear, see, sound
• belong to, consist of, contain, include, need
• appear, resemble, seem

• يكون
• يحب، يحب، يفضل، يتمنى
• ينصت، يرى، يبدو
• يرجع لـ، يشمل، يحتوي، يتضمن، يحتاج
• يظهر ، يشبه، يتراءى

Regular and irregular verbs
الأفعال المنتظمة و الشاذة

This is more a question of vocabulary than of grammar. The only real difference between regular and irregular verbs is that they have different endings for their past tense and past participle forms. For regular verbs, the past tense ending and past participle ending is always the same: -ed. For irregular verbs, the past tense ending and the past participle ending is variable, so it is necessary to learn them by heart.

regular verbs: present, past tense, past participle

الأفعال المنتظمة: التصريف الأول، التصريف الثاني، التصريف الثالث

• look, looked, looked
• work, worked, worked

• ينظر، نظر، نظر
• يعمل، عمل، عمل

irregular verbs: present, past tense, past participle

الأفعال الشاذة: التصريف الأول، التصريف الثاني، التصريف الثالث

• buy, bought, bought
• cut, cut, cut
• do, did, done

• يشتري، شرى، شرى
• يقطع، قطع، قطع
• يعمل، عمل، عمل

Often the above divisions can be mixed. For example, one verb could be irregular, transitive and dynamic; another verb could be regular, transitive and stative.

في أغلب الأحيان التقسيمات أعلاه يمكن أن تخلط. على سبيل المثال، فعل ما يمكن أن يكون شاذ، متعدي و حركي; فعل أخر يمكن أن يكون منتظم، متعدي و حالة.
