Heteronyms

Heteronyms, homonyms and homophones are often confused. So here are some straightforward definitions:

Definition: A heteronym is a word which, although spelled the same way in different contexts, is usually accented differently and has different meanings. For example, attRIbute: belonging to; ATTribute: a characteristic;

Definition: Homonyms are words which are spelled alike but have different meanings in different contexts. For example, the word: bark has three distinct meanings. The first is the sound that a dog makes. The second is the cork-like covering of a tree, and the third is a type of sailing vessel.

Definition: By contrast, Homophones are words like: flour and flower. Both words are pronounced the same. They are not only spelled differently, but also mean completely different things.

What follows is by no means a comprehensive list of heteronyms. If you have any comments, corrections, or suggestions for additional heteronyms, feel free to forward them to me at:

1. abUSE: to use improperly; ABUse: improper treatment
2. ADvocate: one who speaks in support of something; advoCATE: to argue for someone else;
3. ALTERnate: to take turns; alterNATE: the other;
4. attRIbute: belonging to; ATTribute: a characteristic;
5. bass: (pronounced: base) lowest male singing voice; bass: (pronounced as written) perch-like fish;
6. BLESSed: past tense of: bless; BLESS-ED: having divine aid;
7. bow: (pronounced to rhyme with: how) bend down in respect; bow (pronounced to rhyme with: go) used for playing the violin;
8. BUFfet: to slap; bufFET: meal which guests serve themselves;
9. close: (pronounced as: cloze) to shut; (pronounced as: cloce) nearby;
10. COMpact: firmly packed; comPACT: an agreement, small case for powder;
11. CONduct: behavior; conDUCT: to lead;
12. CONsole: floor cabinet of a radio, TV or organ; conSOLE: comfort, cheer up;
13. CONtact: influential acquaintance; conTACT: being in touch with;
14. CONtent: all that is contained; conTENT: satisfied;
15. CONvict: a prisoner serving a sentence; conVICT: find guilty;
16. DEfect: an imperfection; defect: to desert;
17. DELIgate: representative; deliGATE: entrust to another;
18. DESert: an arid region; desERT: to leave a place;
19. DICtate: command; dicTATE: say something for another to write down;
20. DIrect: guide; diRECT: immediate;
21. DIScharge: something that is emitted; disCHARGE: dismiss;
22. does: female deer, rabbits, etc,; does: present tense of: do
23. dove: past tense of: dive; dove: a kind of pigeon;
24. ENtrance: door, gate, etc.; enTRANCE: to delight;
25. HOUse: (pronounced as: howse; a residential building; HOUse: (pronounced as: howze) to place in residence;
26. INcline: have a preference; inCLINE: a slope;
27. INTI-MATE: to suggest something; INTImate: (pronounced as: intimet) very close;
28. INvalid: one who is ill or disabled; inVALID: unsound, not valid;
29. lead: (pronounced as: leed) direct or guide: lead: (pronounced as: led) graphite used in pencils;
30. MINute: 1/60th part of an hour; miNUTE: very small;
31. MOped: a bicycle with a small motor; MOPED: (past tense of: mope) was gloomy;
32. NUMber: quantity; part of a program of entertainment; NUMbER: (pronounced as: nummer) even more numb; 33. PREsent: a gift, being at a certain place; preSENT: introduce;
34. ProDUCE: to make something; PRODuce: fruit and vegetables;
35 .PROject: a scheme; proJECT: propose;
36. read: (pronounced as: reed) to understand written matter; read: (pronounced as: red) understood;
37. REBel: one who openly resists authority; reBEL: to resist;
38. reCORD: to keep a written account; RECord: known facts;
39. reFUSE: to reject; REFuse: garbage;
. reJECT: refuse to accept; REject: someone or something who is refused;40
41. resign: give up as a claim, position, etc.; resign: to accept something passively;
42. REsort: place for a vacation; reSORT: to turn for help;
43. reSUME: to continue after interrupting; resumE: a summary, especially of one's employment history;
44. row: (pronounced to rhyme with: how) a quarrel; row: (pronounced to rhyme with: low) a line of people, etc.;
. sake: motive, cause; sake: a Japanese alcoholic beverage;45
46. sanction: authorization; sanction: punitive measure against a nation;
47. SEWer: (pronounced as: soo-wer) drainage pipes; SEWer: (pronounced as: sow-er) one who sews;
48. sow: (pronounced to rhyme with: how) adult female pig: sow: (pronounced to rhyme with: blow) plant with seed;
49. SUBject: topic for discussion or study; subJECT: make undergo;
50. tear: (pronounced to rhyme with: pear) to pull apart by force; tear: (pronounced to rhyme with: here) a drop of liquid from the eye;
51. wind: (pronounced to rhyme with: mind) to turn, coil, or twine around; wind: (pronounced to rhyme with: sinned) air in motion;
52. wound: (pronounced to rhyme with: woond) an injury to the body; wound (pronounced to rhyme with wowned) past tense of: wind;
