Refresher on Nouns, Pronouns, Adjectives, Verbs, and Adverbs

Noun: person, place or thing.
E.g. cat, door, girl, seat, car, cloud

Proper noun: a specific person, place or thing – always starts with a capital
letter.
E.g. Susan, Australia, Monday, June

Pronoun: replaces a proper noun.  Pronouns include: I, we, they, them, their,
   she, he, him, her.
E.g.  Susan likes her best friend’s new car.
Without pronouns the sentence would say “Susan likes Susan’s best friend’s new car” and that just sounds plain silly.

Adjective: describing word.
E.g. small dog, yellow flower, noisy machinery.

Verb: a doing or being word.
E.g. She ran up the street, the dog was barking.

Adverb: describes how, when or where of the verb.
E.g. she ran up the street quickly – how did she run [verb]?
quickly [adverb]
E.g. the dog was barking loudly – how was he barking [verb]?
loudly [adverb]
* Adverbs usually end in ‘ly’.
